Press Release Body = About the Book:

The Balaclava Brigade is an adventure mystery story most suitable for competent
readers aged 8 to 12 years, although it might appeal to some older readers,
especially those who, like the author, were evacuated between 1939 and 1945. Since
the action is set during the Second World War and because the main character is an
evacuee, this book fits in very well with the 'Britain Since 1930' (Second World
War) option on the National Curriculum for History at Key Stage 2. Although the
characters are entirely fictitious the geographical setting for the story is the
village to which the author was evacuated, and many of the incidents narrated in the
book are loosely based upon the author's own childhood wartime experiences.

It is August 1940 and Britain is at war with Germany. A ten year old Birmingham lad,
Tommy, has been evacuated away from his home in the city to a small rural
coal-mining village. This is a time of rationing, gas masks, the black-out, the
Battle of Britain, the start of the blitz, 'Dig for Victory, the Home Guard and the
threat of imminent invasion from across the Channel. Tommy and his motley group of
friends band together, for they are determined to play their part in defending their
village and their country against Hitler's invading troops. They form themselves
into the Balaclava Brigade, an army style unit with all the trappings of a genuine
military company. Their exploits are sometimes hair-raising, often hilarious. They
are alarmed when they keep seeing a strange limping figure behaving suspiciously in
their village. The mystery of this stranger runs throughout the entire book. Who is
this fellow who has suddenly appeared in their midst and what is he doing in their
village?
